“the Geometric Centre”…
06/04/2011 by admin.
Sid Waddell couldn’t believe his “gogglin bins” when he witnessed Phil ‘the Power’ Taylor achieve not one, but two nine dart finishes during 2010’s Premier League tournament. There’s loads to love about darts: the design of the board, unpredictable arrows, the elegant rules and superior sportsmanship…oh and Sid Waddell of course.

End of the line…
17/02/2011 by admin.
Dear Mary,
Yes, it will be bliss
To go with you by train to Diss,
Your walking shoes upon your feet;
We’ll meet, my sweet, at Liverpool Street.
That levellers we may be reckoned
Perhaps we’d better travel second;
Or, lest reporters on us burst,
Perhaps we’d better travel first.
Above the chimney-pots we’ll go
Through Stepney, Stratford-atte-Bow
And out to where the Essex marsh
Is filled with houses new and harsh
Till, Witham pass’d, the landscape yields
On left and right to widening fields,
Flint church-towers sparkling in the light,
Black beams and weather-boarding white,
Cricket-bat willows silvery green
And elmy hills with brooks between,
Maltings and saltings, stack and quay
And, somewhere near, the grey North Sea;
Then further gentle undulations
With lonelier and less frequent stations,
Till in the dimmest place of all
The train slows down into a crawl
And stops in silence…..Where is this?
Dear Mary Wilson, this is Diss.

The overwhelming truth of it?…
16/02/2011 by admin.
It’s with a little tongue-in-cheekness that I have plonked these clips in the following viewing order. The remarkable Powers of Ten is a reminder that Charles and Ray Eames did more than just design nice chairs, proving as they did that it’s hip to be square. And if all that wonderment gets too much for you, Peggy Lee is on hand to offer a more universe-weary perspective.

Eightsome Reel…

This handy, hypnotic dance guide looks more like a science experiment than a ceilidh dance. The full 7 and a half minutes (with sound) should only be attempted if you are drunk on scotch.

Plenty of Turkey over Christmas….

Competitive skating for the first time in 5 years up on Welney Wash. Hard to imagine now, but at the end of the 19th century when fen skating was enjoying its heyday, normally isolated places like Welney would attract thousands of spectators. All vying for the best spot on which to view some of the world’s fastest speed skaters. Tom Jenkins captured the competition at Earith for the The Guardian, back in January.
